Healing Party Anxiety

By Marty Marsh

Do you suffer from party anxiety? How about networking anxiety?
That's when you're at a social or business gathering and someone
asks "So, what do you do?" and you have no idea what to say.

Because everyone has their own idea about what labels and titles
mean, if you answer with a generic "I'm an accountant" or with
whatever label you've given yourself, you've lost any opportunity
to connect with a prospect.

Most of us jump right in and start talking about what we do and
how we do it, but a potential prospect will immediately tune-in to
your message if you "hit a nerve" with them first.

Do that by first identifying your target market and then identify
the issue, problem or challenge your target market is facing. Like
this: "I work with these kinds of people or businesses who are
having problems with or struggling with this particular issue."

Naturally, their next question should be, "How do you do that?"
and then you can expand on what you do. Remember, no one cares
what process you use to do something, they only care about the
results you can provide.

When someone asks me what I do, I reply, "I work with self-
employed people who aren't generating enough sales because they
feel overwhelmed and frustrated marketing their business."

Now, what are you going to say the next time someone asks, "So,
what do you do?"
